Pre-thesis for ETEC 644

This is what I have so far for the pre-thesis, all comments and suggestions are welcomed. In fact I love it when people take time to look at my work and give me feedback.

Week 3 Pre-Thesis

Chapter 1: Background

A. Introduction:
Schools today are always trying to teach the students what is needed for students to succeed in life. They learn language arts, math, history, science, physical education, art, and music. With roughly six and a half hours of time the students spend in the classroom, it is hard for educators to teach these subjects let alone technology. Most students don’t even have access to basic technology like the Internet or a computer. That’s why some students love every chance they get to use a computer, even if it is to do a class assignment or project. With technology I have seen it improves student behaviors about learning and creates interest for the students. With technology students are able to be more creative and have easier access to more information thanks to the Internet. With the growing use of technology in the world today, people are required to use technology in some form in their everyday life. This means students would be required to use the technology when they join the work force, so it is important they get knowledge of the technology and get use to using the technology while they are in school. Nowadays the school district is trying to add technology standards for students to learn and have basic skills and knowledge of technology, but why wait. If students acquire the knowledge when they are young, then it will be easier for them in the future and for their teachers as well. For this project, I will be teaching students how to use the program iMovie. They are required to create a project on a country and I thought this would be a good way to teach the students this program so they could make a presentation of their country using iMovie.

B. Statement of the Problem: Our school’s students have the attitude and access to learn technology, but the teachers and students lack the knowledge about the software they have available to them.

C. Purpose of the Project: To create a resource for students and teachers to learn the basic functions of the program iMovie with using iMovie to create a movie showing the functions of iMovie.

Chapter 2: Review of the Literature

Chapter 3: Project Design

A. Analysis
1. Needs Assessment:
a. Students-
i. Discussion- I asked the students how they would like to present their projects. They have the choice of Powerpoint, poster board, or iMovie.
ii. Observation- Show students basic computer skills and knowledge as they complete task.
2. Specific Problems to Kimbark Elementary-
a. Students needs of completing projects
b. Students’ lack of knowledge of computer programs available.
3. Characteristics of Population-
4. Assessment of Presentation-
a. Student surveys
b. Student projects
c. Teacher surveys
d. Student future projects
B. Design
1. Finding the Solution-
a. View other training videos of other software
b. Find subject matter specialist
c. Storyboard of the video, asking perspective and previous viewers for input and comments.
d. Resource viewable for easy viewing using iMovie to view on any computer or DVD player.
C. Development
1. Alpha Test 1- Teach a group of students to learn what knowledge of the program is needed in the resource.
2. Alpha Test 2- Create resource based on information collected in Alpha Test 1, then use resource with another group of students.
3. Revise resource with information from Alpha Test 2.
4. Beta Test- Present to teachers and students who show interest in learning the program.
D. Implementation
1. Place resource on a central server or on every computer for all students and teachers wanting to learn the iMovie program.
2. Notify teachers and students of the resource and show them how to access the resource.
E. Evaluation
1. Determine effectiveness
2. Reflection

Session 2

Well after some thinking and after the class on Thursday, I came up with a "party sentence" for my project. Here it is: I am developing a resource to assist students in learning the iMovie program to help students create projects and movies.

Now I'm on to creating the thesis for this class, but I am having trouble with it. I always have trouble with this, but I will put all my effort in it and hopefully pull it off. I turned my time line and I hope I have everything I need for it.

The project I am doing for this assignment is a resource for students to learn the basics of iMovie. The process I will be taking is to teach a group of students the basics of iMovie, then I will create a resource for other students that includes everything I learned from teaching the first group of students the program iMovie. I am looking forward to this project, and I like the support I have gotten from my principal and the teachers. I am even excited because some of the teachers want to join in learning the program because they want to be able to work with iMovie. I have even been asked to teach some of the teachers other programs like Word, GarageBand, and Excel. I have my work cut out for me. Until next time, I hope everyone is having a good quarter.

Session 1

This is my first blog for this class. I have been thinking since we had our class on Talkshoe and I am still thinking about what I am doing my project on. When I was on talkshoe I kept getting kicked off, but I listened to the recording and I have some ideas of what I want to do, but I need some help narrowing the idea. I want to do a project on teaching students to create projects with software, such as iMovie. This is something that I have planned, but I am waiting to hear back from Dr. Newberry to find out if this would be an acceptable project or maybe he might have a more acceptable project idea that I might like. If any of my fellow classmates have any ideas for me, all suggestions are welcomed.
